A VESA is an international standard that is used for mounting televisions and other flat-panel monitors to a wall mount, TV stand or any other fixture. A television and bracket must share the same VESA size to ensure that they properly fit together. Almost all televisions are VESA compatible, meaning they have a 4 hole attachment interface on the back of their screen. 

A VESA mount size identifies the distance between the 4 holes on the back of a television. The most common VESA TV mount sizes are:

• 75mm x 75mm
• 100mm x 100mm
• 200mm x 200mm
• 400mm x 400mm
• 600mm x 400mm

Your mounting bracket should fit your television’s size and weight. If you can’t locate your TV’s VESA mount size on the instruction manuals or packaging, you can measure the hole pattern on the back of the TV to confirm that it conforms to the VESA mount size dimensions outlined above. 

Once you have determined the VESA mount size for your television, you will have to find a mounting bracket that shares the same size. This will ensure that the mounting bracket can support your television’s size and weight. 

There are three main types of wall-mounted TV brackets that serve different functions:

1. Flat: flat TV wall mounts secure the television to a fixed position on the wall. This sleek kind of wall mount is often considered the most ‘traditional’ type. 
2. Tilt: tilt TV wall mounts can be angled to 15 degrees. As these types of wall mounts help to counteract sunlight or reflections, they are commonly used for televisions that are mounted high on the wall.
3. Turn: a turn TV wall mount offers the greatest amount of flexibility when it comes to arranging the television’s position. With a turn TV mount, you can tilt or pivot your television to a wide range of positions and adjust it up to 180% horizontally and 20% vertically. Turn wall mounts and full motion TV brackets are popular for large, open-plan rooms where people will be watching the television from a number of different angles.

The complexity of installing a wall mount will depend on your DIY experience. Installing a wall mount is not necessarily an overtly complex project, however, it is an important task that you will want to complete successfully to prevent damage to your home or television. 

You’ll need a drill, tape measure, screwdriver, stud detector, and rawl plugs before you set to work installing the wall mount. 

Before choosing the final position to install your wall mount, keep in mind the following:

• Ensure that the wall supports at least 4 times the total loading weight of the television, equipment, and other attachments. 
• Check whether the position has easy access to power outlets.
• Consider whether your television will be exposed to excessive amounts of sunlight in the proposed position.
• Make sure that the bottom of the television’s display will be positioned no higher than eye level when seated, and that the top of the display is no higher than eye level when standing.
