Why is cable management important?

Some of the most notable benefits of a fully-functioning cable management system are:

Organisation: Nobody wants to deal with tangled, damaged cables and wiring - especially in your home or workplace. It is much easier to identify cables when they are properly arranged and labelled. Effective cable management promotes a neater and more pleasant working environment.

Timesaving: Cable management ultimately saves time in the long run. It’s important that when the time comes for troubleshooting or maintenance, you can easily locate and identify specific cables.

Safety: Without a safe cable storage system, there is a significant risk of falling and tripping over misplaced cables. Cable management ensures that cables are safely stored away from people.

Limits cable interference: Cables that are kept separate from one another are less likely to experience data or noise interference.

Are cable management boxes safe?

Anything involving electricity has risk involved. Cable management boxes, however, are often considered comparatively more unsafe due to the fact that many of them do not allow for air flow. By limiting the amount of air from entering the box, a cable management box can be prone to overheating.

Cable trays are a safer alternative to cable management boxes as they allow for better airflow, which dramatically decreases the risks associated with overheating.

How do I get started with computer cable management?

It’s never too late to start organising your cables with best practice cable management.

The first step of computer cable management is to think strategically about the best arrangement for your cables. Don’t just start plugging cables into the closest power outlet. It’s recommended to begin with a blank slate and consider various options before deciding on the best placement for your cables. Are your cables similar lengths? If not, could you replace some of them with ones that are to allow for a more streamlined installation process?

After analysing the cables in your system, you will then need to decide where you want to store your cables. The placement of your cables will ultimately determine the cable management products your system requires.

Once you’ve decided on a position, it’s time to begin incorporating cable management features such as trays or cable ties. Reconnect wires by guiding them through your cable management features and then ensure everything is connected properly and labelled accordingly. Finally, use cable clips to tie up any final loose cables or connect the ends of the cables where they directly insert into your device.
