What are the different types of computer cables?

  • HDMI cable, which transfers digital video and audio signals from a computer to a separate display device, such as a monitor or projector.
  • Ethernet cables, also known as RJ45 cables. Ethernet cabling carries the broadband signals between a device and a local network.
  • USB Cable, considered one of the most universal forms of cabling. A USB cable can connect a computer to a wide variety of devices, including cameras, printers and mobile phones. There are 5 common types of USB cables: Type-A, Type-B, Type-C, Mini-USB, Micro-USB.

There are 3 common types of cable connectors.

  1. Coaxial cable connectors: used to link cables to other devices.
  2. Twisted-pair cable connectors: used to connect a cable to the Ethernet network.
  3. Fibre optic cable connectors: used to securely connect cables together. This enables signals to travel from one cable to another without interruption.

What is the difference between CAT5 and CAT6 cables?

Both CAT5 and CAT6 cables are commonly used for Ethernet and other network connections.

While both types of these Ethernet cables are reliable and efficient, there are certain differences in terms of their performance.

CAT6 Ethernet cables are a newer type of cable and offer higher data transfer speeds in comparison to a CAT5 cable. CAT5 cables are limited to 100Mbps transfer speeds, while CAT6 cables provide transfer speeds of up to 350Mbps. This is because CAT6 cables have a higher bandwidth, which is capable of transmitting a greater amount of data.

Outside of speed, CAT6 cables also hold another advantage over CAT5 cables in that they reduce crosstalk (i.e. the disturbances caused by an interference with another signal in an adjacent circuit).

Despite their differences, both CAT5 and CAT6 network cables can be plugged into the same ports. While CAT6 cables can be used on CAT5 networks, a CAT5 cable will only work at CAT5 standards if used in a CAT6 network.
