HDMI Cables

High definition multimedia interface cables, or HDMI cables for short, are used to transmit video and audio between a range of devices, including televisions, monitors, projectors and gaming consoles.

4Cabling stocks a wide range of HDMI cables, each with different purposes. A HDMI to HDMI lead enables the connection of devices that have the same port type. Other HDMI cables feature different connections at one end, such as USB-C, USB-A, VGA or DVI, to enable a wide range of devices to be linked together. For the most modern TVs that support 4K image transmission, a HDMI to HDMI 2.0 cable allows you to experience your favourite media in the highest possible resolution

While HDMI is a universal connection type, the functionality of your device may differ depending on whether it supports HDMI ARC or HDMI CEC. For more information on the different capabilities of HDMI devices, please see our blog comparing HDMI ARC and HDMI CEC.

Our HDMI solutions are just the start of our extensive range of audio visual products, including AV cables, display casting devices and accessories.

HDMI Cables: FAQs

What is an HDMI cable used for?

An HDMI cable is used to connect devices for the purposes of transferring high definition video and audio. While all HDMI cables feature an HDMI port at one end, the type of connection at the other end can vary, to allow devices with different port types to be linked.

Can I connect HDMI cables to my TV?

HDMI connections are supported by most TVs. An HDMI to HDMI cable allows you to connect your laptop, gaming console or media player to your TV as an output, in order to broadcast videos, games or conference calls.

The most modern TVs are equipped with an HDMI 2.0 port, which supports 4K resolution. To display images in this format, you may need to purchase an HDMI to HDMI 2.0 cable to connect your devices.

What does an HDMI port look like?

HDMI is a standardised connection technology that uses a 19-pin port which measures 13.9mm x 4.45mm. The ports look like a rectangle that has been tapered on one end.

What do I do if my TV doesn’t have an HDMI port?

If your TV doesn’t have an HDMI port, there are a number of ways that you can still connect HDMI-capable devices using various adapters. Depending on the capability of your television, you can use an HDMI to AV/RCA converter or an HDMI to VGA adapter to plug in your devices. If you choose to use a VGA adapter, you will also require a separate audio connection.

What is the difference between HDMI and USB ports on a TV?

HDMI and USB connections serve different purposes on your TV. The HDMI port is designed for connecting a range of devices in order to transmit high definition video and audio.

USB ports on your TV can be used for a variety of purposes, including viewing media files, connecting external devices, charging your smartphone or tablet, and upgrading the software of your television via a file stored on an external hard drive.

HDMI cables or High-Definition Multimedia Interface cables, are the best way to get optimum audio/video data from an HDMI-compliant device: computer monitor, video projector, digital television, or digital audio device, replacing old analog video standards. HDMI cables with Ethernet are the ideal one-cable solution for connecting all your much loved devices in these advanced home-networking environments, providing the connection platform that will allow HDMI-enabled components to share content between devices.
