What's the difference between Cat6, CAT6A and CAT5E computer cables?

CAT6, CAT6A, and CAT5E are all types of twisted pair copper cables that are used for networking and communications applications. The main difference between these cables is their performance and capabilities.

CAT6 cables are standard copper cables that are commonly used for Ethernet networking. They are capable of transmitting data at speeds up to 10 Gbps (gigabits per second) over distances of up to 100 metres. CAT6 cables are backwards compatible with CAT5 and CAT5E cables, and are often used for applications such as Gigabit Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and home networking.

CAT6A cables are an enhanced version of CAT6 cables, and are designed to support higher speeds and longer distances. They are capable of transmitting data at speeds up to 10 Gbps over distances of up to 100 metres, and can also support frequencies up to 500 MHz. CAT6A cables are often used for applications such as 10 Gigabit Ethernet and high-speed data centres.

CAT5E cables are another type of twisted pair copper cables that are commonly used for Ethernet networking. They are capable of transmitting data at speeds up to 1Gbps over distances of up to 100 metres, making both CAT6A and CAT6 cables faster than CAT5e cables.

How do I know what Ethernet cable I need?

There are a few factors to consider when selecting an Ethernet cable:

  • Speed: Different Ethernet cables are designed to support different speeds. For example, CAT5e cables are suitable for Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps), while CAT6 cables are suitable for Gigabit Ethernet (1 Gbps) and CAT6A cables are suitable for 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 Gbps). Make sure to choose a cable that is capable of supporting the speeds required by your network.
  • Distance: Ethernet cables have a maximum distance that they can transmit data. For example, CAT5e cables are typically limited to a distance of 100 metres, while CAT6 and CAT6A cables are also generally limited to a distance of 100 metres. Make sure to choose a cable that is capable of transmitting data over the distance required by your network.
  • Compatibility: Make sure to choose an Ethernet cable that is compatible with the devices you are connecting. For example, if you are connecting devices that use different types of connectors (such as RJ45 and SFP), you may need to use a media converter.
  • Quality: It is important to choose a high-quality Ethernet cable to ensure reliable performance.

What are the different types of computer plugs called?

Computer plugs, also known as connectors, are used to connect devices to a computer or to a network. There are many different types of computer plugs, each designed for specific purposes and uses. Some common examples include:

  • RJ45: commonly used for Ethernet cables. It is a large, rectangular plug with eight pins arranged in a row.
  • USB: commonly used to connect a wide range of devices to a computer, including keyboards, mice, printers, and external hard drives. It is a small, rectangular plug with four or more pins.
  • HDMI: commonly used to connect devices such as TVs, monitors, and projectors to a computer or other video source. It is a rectangular plug with 19 pins arranged in a row.
  • VGA: commonly used to connect devices such as monitors and projectors to a computer. It is a large, rectangular plug with 15 pins arranged in three rows.
  • Audio: commonly used to connect audio devices, such as speakers and microphones to a computer. There are several different types of audio plugs, including 3.5mm mini plugs, 1/4 inch plugs, and RCA plugs.
